What are regulations that control generation and disposal of e-waste in India?
Currently there are no specific legislations pertaining to e-waste management. However, this is covered under Hazardous Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2003. Therefore, anyone who collects e-waste must comply with this regulation.

Why should e-waste be handled properly?
Is it toxic? Some of the components of e-waste contain materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCBs), etched chemicals, brominated flame retardants which are hazardous in nature. Therefore e-waste should be handled in an environment-friendly manner to prevent this hazardous material polluting the environment.

E-waste as such is not toxic. However, processing of e-waste to recover valuable materials such as lead, copper and gold is hazardous. Therefore a careful environmentally sound recovery process is required for recycling the e-waste.

How to dispose the e-waste?
E-wastes should not be given to unauthorized vendors / buyers. The respective pollution control boards in different States authorize agencies to collect e-waste from generators. The dealers should have valid Air Consent, Water Consent and Hazardous waste authorization. This authorization is given based on the competency of the recycler, infrastructure and other factors as decided by the regulatory authorities.

What are the advantages of dealing with Global E-waste Management and Services (GEMS)?

Unlike most of the approved e-waste dealers, we pay you for the waste that we take. We also organize for the transportation, even for small quantities of waste.

We already have a well connected transport arrangement for industrial hazardous waste that we can effectively be deployed for transportation of e-waste from any location in India. What are the websites that offer more information on e-waste?
